SANBOX

SANBOX refers to a novel sanitation approach for remote tourism facilities. The SANBOX system aims at reaching high treatment performance, recycling of water and nutrients as well as the use of solar power as an energy source. seecon managed the implementation of a SANBOX prototype at the Britannia lodge, one of the largest high mountain lodges of the Alps. The original dry latrines were replaced by modern Jets™ vacuum toilets. Now, the wastewater is treated in a box that is attached to the south face of the lodge. The design of the box is based on greenhouse technology, which uses the strong solar radiation available at this high altitude to produce sufficient heat to enable the biological processes of the treatment system. Solar radiation is also used to evaporate most of the wastewater stream rendering the system equal-zero-emission. The remaining solids can be used as fertiliser for agricultural production.
