Tropenhaus Frutigen

The Tropenhaus Frutigen is a new tourist attraction in the Bernese Oberland. It uses renewable energy for the first ever alpine sturgeon breeding and caviar production, as well as the cultivation of tropical fruits in its own greenhouses. The required energy is sourced from the Lötschberg tunnel: 100 litres per second of warm mountain water flows out of the railway base tunnel and this heat energy is utilised in the tropical greenhouse. In this way the Tropenhaus Frutigen offers an exciting combination of sustainably cultivated exotic plants, aquaculture, interesting educational displays, and sophisticated culinary experiences. seecon was associated with the project from initial planning of nutrient and water cycles right through to the establishment of Tropenhaus Frutigen AG, and is involved in the important strategic decision making processes through its membership on the board of directors.
