Cattail field Wauwilermoos

seecon has partnered with the Swiss Ornithological Institute and others to set up a trial field for cattail cultivation in the region of Wauwilermoos (LU). On an agricultural trial field of one hectare, cultivation methods for the cattail were optimised (point of harvest, harvest method, duration of flood irrigation) so that the plant itself as well as wild animals and other plants can benefit at the best. Apart from its agricultural use, cattail fields are valuable from an ecological perspective as they exhibit a high diversity of species und foster the recovery of damaged bog soil and depleted farmland which can be found in the plains of Wauwil. The research conducted by the Swiss Ornithological Institute has shown that the cattail fields have a positive effect particularly on dragonflies, amphibians and birds.
