Ecosan capacity development in Bhutan

Together with local partners and the WHO, seecon assists in the introduction of ecological sanitation facilities (Ecosan) in Bhutan. In this small kingdom in the Himalayas there is often a lack of both good sanitation infrastructure and knowledge about sustainable systems. seecon provides training courses for local players in the field of ecological sanitation, to instruct these persons in the implementation of sustainable waste water systems. The focus here lies not only on hygienic toilets: The end-users – often mountain farmers – benefit further, because the toilets provide them with valuable compost as a natural fertiliser. Meanwhile, more than 40 pilot installations have been built, and adapted to local conditions, in four districts of Bhutan.
